For a missionary Church

World Mission Day is the perfect occasion to become aware of the missionary duty, and to remind all members of the Church, whatever their function or place, that this duty is addressed to them. All must meditate on the Second Vatican Council’s vigorous texts, in which it is affirmed that the whole Church is missionary, that the work of evangelization is the fundamental duty of the People of God (Ad Gentes, No 35) and that every disciple of Christ has his share in the task of spreading the faith (Lumen Gentium, No 17). We must constantly repeat the teaching of the Council, as expressed in many of its documents, as it was deepened by the Synod of Bishops in 1974, and which Pope Paul VI synthesized in his Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Nuntiandi, dated December 8, 1975. If I invite you once again to return to these documents, which have been cited so many times, it is because I am convinced of their importance, which must be deepened ever more.
