Therefore, the month of October must be everywhere the month of universal mission, the month of mutual missionary support under the aegis of the Pontifical Mission Societies. For this reason, the bishops are invited, according to the new statutes, “to ask those responsible for Catholic works and the faithful to renounce to any special collections during this period”. In the past, several bishops, following the example of the Holy See, have already given directives in this regard.
Finally, and you will be keen to remember, missionary co-operation must not be compromised by the current economic crisis from which all the countries of the world are suffering. May this crisis not become, for Christians in rich countries, an excuse to limit their own generosity! Let them not forget that Third World countries and Churches are even more affected by this crisis than they are.
