Preachers of the Good News
The world needs Christ and his Gospel more than ever, thus, the number of preachers of the Good News must increase in proportion. Another purpose of missionary co-operation is to offer material support to the evangelization. Forgetting or criticizing this aspect could be a subtle excuse for being generous. The financial needs of the young Churches, which almost all belong to Third World countries, are still enormous, despite their efforts to achieve financial autonomy. They need help, either for seminaries, that provide formation and support to the future priests, or to support the current collaborators of the mission or to allow the construction of churches, schools, dispensaries or centres essential for social action. To meet these daily and essential necessities, young churches must be able to count on regular and reliable help. This is the reason why I call all of you, to contribute to the main fund of the Pontifical Mission Societies, which precisely have the purpose of ensuring this regular contribution. The example of Christians in less advantaged countries who, despite their poverty, donate their own money, should give pause for thought to those who live in rich countries and who often donate only a small part of their surplus.
