The collaboration of young people

Today, the evangelical interpellation of Jesus “The harvest is abundant but the labourers are few” (Mt 9:37) also concerns the Church. In recent decades, the significant drop in vocations in several particular Churches that have a rich missionary tradition, as well as in this archdiocese, the other dioceses and the religious and missionary institutes of Spain and other countries, must encourage all pastors and pastoral workers, as well as Christian families, to make young people aware of their availability to collaborate in the proclamation of the Gospel, while helping them discern the call of Jesus and welcome it as a grace of predilection.

Because you, dear young people, you are the Church’s hope. Do you love the incarnated and updated coherence of your faith? When a Catholic becomes aware his faith, he becomes a missionary. Since you are inserted into the mystical body of Christ, you cannot be indifferent to the salvation of men. To believe in Jesus Christ is to believe in his life program for us. To love Christ is to love those he loves and to love as he loves them. Only Christ has words of eternal life. And there is no other name that can save men and peoples.

(Homily of His Holiness John Paul II during a celebration of the Word with missionaries, No 7, November 6, 1982.)
