The Pontifical Mission Societies at the service of the universal mission

The organization of missionary action during the month of October, the month of missions, of which World Mission Day is the culminating event, is entrusted to the Pontifical Mission Societies, because the institution of this day is due to their initiative. In recent years, the Pontifical Mission Societies have been established in all young Churches. All around the world, their purpose is to “instill within Catholics, from their early childhood, with a truly universal and Catholic spirit” (Ad Gentes, No 38). As stated in the statutes that I approved last year (June 26, 1980), this is their main purpose. They are also the institution intended to promote the missionary cooperation of each particular Church, each bishop, each parish, each community, each family and each person. This being a duty for all, we can ask everyone to give priority to supporting the work of the Pontifical Mission Societies.
